Occasionally the irritant is well below the skin. hot spot is painful as well as itchy. Some owners find that cold compress such as cold tea bags can provide relief for the dog until the sore heals naturally. The infection have spread to the deeper layers of the skin and require more aggressive treatment. Some dogs will bite to the point of selfmutilation. Often, small hot spots will heal on their own or with only minor intervention.

GroomingMats in the fur or trapped undercoat can prevent normal aeration and drying of the skin, and result in hot spots. Food allergies are often diagnosed with change in diet many different hypoallergenic diets are available. Sometimes the hot spot can have foul smell. hot spots occur in the summer months during hot, humid weather. Your veterinarian might even recommend surgical removal of the granuloma. What is the treatment for hot spots? The wound itself needs to be kept clean and undisturbed for healing to occur. In general dogs with thick or long hair coats are at risk.

Dermatitis resulting from an environmental allergen is also called atopy. The allergen might be seasonal as with ragweed allergy in people, geographical for example, localized to specific park or town, or something found commonly in the home or mold. An Elizabethan collar the dreaded head cone! can be used in the short term to prevent the dog from accessing the wound, and socks can help reduce scratching. In other cases, inappropriate use of an ointment might seal in the existing infection and prevent healthy aeration of the wound, slowing rather than aiding the healing process.

Skin biopsies or blood tests might be needed to track down the underlying disease. Usually, the area is clipped to remove overlying fur shaving can cause further irritation and washed with mild soap or antiseptic. Dogs with very thick coats need to be towelled or blowdried after swimming or bathing.

Often stressed dog will stop licking when the stress is gone, but dog that licks compulsively be very hard to discourage. Your veterinarian might even recommend surgical removal of the granuloma. What is the treatment for hot spots? The wound itself needs to be kept clean and undisturbed for healing to occur. In cases, determining and treating the underlying cause of the hot spots allergy, disease, behaviour is more than half the battle.

Prevention Many dogs that have repeated problems with hot spots can have the incidence greatly reduced by keeping their hair clipped short during summer, giving them frequent medicated baths and following strict flea control program. In fact, hot spots are sometimes called pyotraumatic dermatitis because the selftrauma is major factor in the development of hot spots. Treatment Treatment must be directed at stopping the growth of the hot spot and eliminating the cause. They will be moist, raw, inflamed and hairless, and can be quite painful.

Animals usually lick, bite or scratch the area, and thus irritate the inflamed skin even more.

Insect bites, especially from fleas, are often found to be the cause. Other causes of hot spots include Allergies atopy inhalant allergies and food allergies Mites Sarcoptes scabei or Cheyletiella Ear infections Poor grooming Burs or plant awns Hip dysplasia or other types of arthritis and degenerative joint disease Anal gland disease Hot spots are circular lesions, usually found on the head, over the hip and along the side of the chest. Do NOT give your aspirin unless prescribed by your veterinarian. We also need to prevent the dog from traumatizing the area even more.

Occurrence The lesions are rare in the colder temperatures of winter. Description and cause Also known as acute moist dermatitis, hot spots are sometimes called pyotraumatic dermatitis because the selftrauma is major factor in the development of hot spots. Do NOT give your aspirin unless prescribed by your veterinarian. We also need to prevent the dog from traumatizing the area even more.

If the dog is very sensitive this need to be done under sedation. Description and cause Also known as acute moist dermatitis, hot spots are usually disease of dogs with long hair or those with dense undercoats. Many dogs develop several of these lesions over the course of their lives. Occurrence The lesions are rare in the colder temperatures of winter. This allows air to into the inflamed tissue and makes it easier to treat.

The surface of the lesion is then cleaned with nonirritating solution such as dilute Nolvasan solution. However, this is not longterm disease. Occurrence The lesions are rare in the colder temperatures of winter.
Dogs with severe or persistent hot spots will need to be seen by veterinarian. But, be very careful not to scrape or damage skin by exerting too much pressure with comb or brush. Aloe vera and chamomile are soothing ingredients to reduce pain and promote healing. Clip the hair around the infected area and gently wash it with antibacterial soap and rinse well.

Thank you.. Here are some hints to help avoid hot spots Double or triple the number of grooming sessions during spring and summer to remove all shedding undercoat. Aloe vera and chamomile are soothing ingredients to reduce pain and promote healing. An oatmeal bath is sometimes helpful one product is Magic Coat Natural Oatmeal Shampoo by Four Paws, available from supply stores. Treatment will stop the itchscratch cycle and antibiotics will fight the infection.

Here are some hints to help avoid hot spots Double or triple the number of grooming sessions during spring and summer to remove all shedding undercoat. Because air cannot circulate easily, ear infections in floppyeared dogs are common and can promote hot spots on the cheeks and under ears. Ask your veterinarian for good ear cleanser and ensure that your Goldens ears are clean. Goldens need extra care, especially during the summer and after swimming. Hot spots are those ugly, infected sores which appear as if by magic on your Golden.

guess Ill take him to the to see what they have to say…I just noticed how similar our avatars look, in terms of poses. Any suggestions?. like the way it is well structured, and if you scroll down there is quick reference chart that it easy to refer to. This problem is coming to light since have talked to numerous dog owners that have pets being treated with Frontline and having the same skin problem. guess Ill do some more research about ringworm…

It is little red, but mostly kind of black and crusty, almost like he scratched off scab. know this sounds lame but, could Barney have mosquito bites? That would be about the right size of inflammation. We give him frontline flea and tick and hes always been tick free except for the few times weve missed the frontline in the early part of the season so we think it works pretty well. Its that they are blackish and scabby looking thats making me wonder.

But, it isnt the size that matters. It kind of looks like what the ticks looked like when they were there, but we cant find any tick. ha ha ha…They might be mosquito bites, but it seems odd that they arent really red. Any suggestions? Hot spots are usually pretty evil looking. He is mostly an inside dog, aside from walks, which are mostly on cement and then little on grass, and then when he goes into our yard it is on grass rather than bushes or woods or anything.

But lately Ive noticed several small maybe dimesized spots on his body all over, well, not all over, but not just in one spothe has one on his upper back and one on inner back thigh. If he yanking hair out? Mosquito bites! Thats so lame. Its that they are blackish and scabby looking thats making me wonder. Like Ive said before, if they werent few days apart, Id swear they were brothers! Could be ringworm. Okay…first of all…is ringworm contagious? From Barney to people? Or Barney to the cats?

Good news and bad news, guess.
The first treatment for hot spots is to dry them out and air to the area. Cool compress the area 24 times day with cool washcloth. Medications Depending on the severity and size of the hot spot, your veterinarian prescribe oral antibiotics, topical drying sprays or medications, andor special shampoos. Sometimes hair can mat over the lesion, obscuring the size and degree of the problem.
